Title: ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUBJECTIVE TIME, SPACE AND VELOCITY.

Abstract: Two methods were applied to test the truth of the hypothesis that the relation between subjective velocity, space and time is the same as the relation between their corresponding physical variables. It was, in disagreement with the results of a previous investigation by J. F. Brown, found that the hypothesis was not true. The former study on the subject, was reviewed and sources of this disagreement explored. The equation relating subjective velocity to subjective space and time was derived theoretically and verified empirically; it describes subjective velocity as being directly proportional to subjective space raised to a power, and indirectly proportional to subjective time raised to another power, or stated equivalently, subjective velocity is a power function of the ratio of subjective space to subjective time. The meaning of this purely subjective equation was discussed. It was indicated that perception of velocity, like perception of space, is immediate in nature, thus being basically independent of physical time and space magnitudes which are large enough to be experienced within the 'psychological present'. Physical time and space might however, affect only the basic magnitude of a perceived speed. (Author)
